Which protection for which risk?

Steel or plastic?
Steel impact protection – usually galvanised and coated yellow – absorbs high impact energy and is suited to forklift traffic and outdoor areas. Flexible plastic protection yields on impact, protects vehicles and floors and can partly be installed without drilling. Special solutions are available for cold stores.
Installation
Most elements are bolted down with heavy-duty anchors; bollards and hoops for outdoor use can also be set in concrete. Plastic column protection is wrapped around the column and closed. Check floor build-up, vehicle weight and approach angle before choosing a solution.
Regulations and marking
In Germany, hazard points on traffic routes are marked yellow-black or red-white in accordance with ASR A1.3. For racking, DGUV Rule 108-007 requires collision protection at least 30 cm high at rack corners in aisles used by industrial trucks. The measures required in each case follow from the risk assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a difference between impact protection and collision guards?
The terms are usually used interchangeably for elements that protect building parts, equipment and people from vehicle impact.
When is rack protection mandatory?
Under DGUV Rule 108-007, racks need collision protection at least 30 cm high at corners in aisles with industrial truck traffic.
