Fire Protection for Wood and Cardboard

Fire protection of wood, wooden constructions, and cardboard is crucial for the safety of buildings and packaging. Eco-friendly flame retardants can be used in wood preservatives, wood coatings, and cardboard packaging to ensure effective fire safety while avoiding the release of harmful chemicals into the environment.

Wood products such as flooring, wall and ceiling panels, roofs, beams, or columns are versatile building materials. Wood-based materials are widely used indoors in residences, entire wooden houses, public buildings, and vehicles. Flame retardants reduce the likelihood of fire, impede the spread of flames, slow the initial burning rate, and thus help extend the time until flashover, providing occupants more time to escape. The flame retardants are applied for fire protection of softwoods like pine, fir, linden, ash; hardwoods like oak, beech, cherry; and wood-based products such as particle boards, fiber-based wood materials, MDF, OSB, plywood. The wood materials impregnated with flame retardants are classified according to DIN 4102, BDS EN ISO 11925-2, BDS EN ISO 9239-1, and EN 13823:2010 as "Class B1", "Class Bfl-s1" and "Class Bs2,d1".

Fire protection of corrugated cardboard material is performed "on site" by application with brush or roller.

Fire Protection for Insulation, Polystyrene, and PU Foams

Insulation materials such as wadding (e.g., cotton or fiber materials), polystyrene, and polyurethane foams (PU foams) play an important role in building fire protection. Eco-friendly flame retardants can be integrated into these materials to increase fire safety without harming the environment. These solutions help improve the safety of buildings.

Fire protection for polystyrene is performed by application with brush or roller, spraying, and by plasma-assisted impregnation methods. The flame-retardant materials are dried at room temperature of about 20°C.

As Extinguishing Agent Additive in Sprinkler Systems, Fire Foam, Fire Extinguishers, and for Wildfire Fighting

Besides passive fire protection measures such as flame retardants, active systems such as sprinkler systems also play an important role in fire protection. By combining eco-friendly flame retardants with modern sprinkler systems, more effective fire protection solutions can be developed to ensure building safety. The flame retardant can also be added to fire foams for use, for example, in wildfire fighting.

    The textile materials impregnated with flame retardant comply with the fire test requirements according to European and international standards EN ISO 6941 for textile materials. Furthermore, treated materials for aircraft meet fire test requirements of European and American regulations according to JAR (FAR) § 25.853 (materials for aviation).


Technical Description of the Offered Flame Retardant

Our offered flame retardants consist of phosphorus and nitrogen salt solutions. Their effectiveness varies depending on the treated materials, with various surfactants such as anionic, cationic, amphoteric, non-ionic surfactants or combinations thereof added. These flame retardants are suitable for treating hydrophilic and hydrophobic porous polymers, providing versatility across different materials with varying physical and chemical properties.

The effectiveness of the flame retardant is based on the synergistic interaction between its phosphorus and nitrogen components. Even in small quantities, the product exhibits significant flame retardant effect when applied to porous polymers. Moreover, the flame retardant is pH-neutral, making it non-corrosive and non-irritating.

The neutral pH of the flame retardant solution contributes to stability during storage, even under freezing conditions, and ensures chemical stability over time. Additionally, the halogen-free composition of the flame retardant eliminates the formation of halogen gases during combustion, thus meeting safety and environmental protection objectives.
