According to the accident statistics of the German Statutory Accident Insurance, 6.1% of reportable accidents occur on stairs, making them a major accident hotspot. "A handrail is mandatory on stairs with at least three steps. If the stair treads are significantly wider than 1.0 meter, the necessity of a second handrail must be assessed. For especially wide stairs (at least four meters wide), such as those that can be found in town halls, an intermediate handrail positioned in the middle is required." Source: TÜV Süd. The use of a handrail is an important measure to prevent accidents on stairs.
