Product information "Restoration Mortar / Repair Mortar"

Mineral repair mortar from Italy for the restoration of historic masonry, natural stone and exposed bricks.

Through the combination of natural lime, selected aggregates (e.g., cocciopesto, marble dust, or crushed sand), and low chemical reactivity, this mortar offers maximum compatibility with old building fabric – without stress or cracking. " Restoring like in Venice " represents a form of historic preservation that combines the highest level of craftsmanship, respect for the historical substance, and the use of authentic, natural materials. It means preserving and renovating buildings in such a way that their history and beauty are permanently preserved – especially in a city like Venice, which sets a global standard due to its unique architecture and delicate environment. Central to this context is the Venice Charter of 1964 – an internationally recognized milestone in historic preservation. To this day, it defines the fundamental principles for the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and, as a seminal text of the 20th century, is deeply rooted in the understanding of historic building practices.

Product advantages of the restoration mortar at a glance

  • Natural lime-based binder (NHL)

  • Highly vapor-permeable and moisture-regulating – protects against mold and structural damage

  • Antiseptic – naturally inhibits mold and bacteria
  • Salt-resistant and free from synthetic additives

  • Stone restoration mortar ideal for natural stone, brick and mixed masonry

  • Flexible & low-stress – prevents cracks in movable masonry
  • Color-adaptable for a historically appropriate appearance

  • Environmentally friendly & reversible – low CO₂ emissions and easily reworkable
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use

  • Pumpable, can be processed with a trowel or machine

  • Top quality, made in Italy near Venice
  • Tried and tested over the long term – historically proven and permanently durable

Lime was already used in the Roman Empire – and many of these buildings still stand today. Its durability and natural properties make it popular again today.

Restoration mortars/plasters & repair mortars

These repair mortars are specifically designed for bricklaying, pointing, supplementing and repairing historical masonry structures and therefore belong closely to the category of stone repair mortar is particularly suitable for historic walls, featuring a soft mix and available in a wide range of colors to match the original structure. Its high compatibility with existing building materials prevents stress and damage within the masonry.

For particularly fine-grained applications, a repair mortar (DD-HRS-RC-13) is available for the so-called "sewing and unpicking" method. This product is ideal for the restoration of exposed brickwork where damaged joints or stones need to be replaced selectively. RC-13 is easy to work with, pumpable, and has excellent breathability.

What exactly does "Sewing & Unpicking" (in Italian "Cuci e Scuci" ) mean?

  • “Unpicking” (literally: “to separate”) refers to the selective removal of defective masonry elements – e.g. cracked or damp bricks or damaged joint areas.

  • “Sewing” (literally: “to sew”) means the reinsertion of new, matching stones with a suitable restoration mortar, as true to the original as possible – “like a seam”.

The fine plaster (DD-HRS-H-12) is a thin-layer, fine-grained solution for surfaces made of natural stone, brick, or terracotta. It accentuates the original structure of the masonry and is preferably used on historic facades, arcades, or interior walls that are to remain visible. This fine-grained plaster mix for restoration, with a thin layer thickness, emphasizes the natural structure of brick, stone, or cocciopesto. Ideal for fine exposed masonry surfaces, both indoors and outdoors. Available in various shades.

The grout (DD-HRS-H-77) was developed specifically for historic floors. It is suitable for color-matched grouting of terracotta tiles, natural stone slabs, or antique floor coverings – especially in the interiors of listed buildings, courtyards, or loggias. This natural grout, made from cocciopesto and hydraulic lime, is specially formulated for terracotta, natural stone, or brick floors. It comes standard in brick red and is also available in sand yellow or terra brown upon request.

Surface treatments & decorative plasters

These products are fine plasters, glazes, or decorative coatings . They serve for aesthetic restoration and surface protection , but not for structural reinforcement or strengthening.

Several lime- and cocciopesto-based fine plasters are used in surface treatment: DD-HRS-RC-12 is a fixative for moisture regulation and substrate consolidation. It improves the adhesion of subsequent coatings and protects mineral substrates from harmful moisture penetration.

DD-HRS-RC-14 is a particularly fine lime finish used for smooth walls, fresco surfaces, or elegant interior surfaces. DD-HRS-RC-15 offers a slightly coarser finish, well-suited for rustic facades or roughly textured wall surfaces.

For medium-grained applications with a Mediterranean character, DD-HRS-RC-16 is recommended – a Cocciopesto lime plaster that is both decorative and functional and can be used indoors and outdoors.

For particularly elegant wall designs, two Marmorino variants are available: DD-HRS-RC-19, a very fine microlime product for smooth, slightly glossy surfaces, and MC Mastro Calce , a classic Marmorino with natural marble content, distinguished by its polishability and elegant appearance. Both are ideally suited for exclusive interiors.

Another decorative product is DD-HRS-H-18D, a marble-effect decorative plaster with a 3–5 mm grain size. It creates textured, antique-looking surfaces and is suitable for both interior and exterior use – for example, on facades, wall niches, or under arcades.

All the products mentioned are characterized by their natural composition, high water vapor permeability, and compatibility with historical building materials . They are the ideal choice for restorations in accordance with historic preservation guidelines, sustainable renovations of old buildings, and stylish, ecologically oriented new buildings.
