Paving joint repair with jointing mortar – for squares, commercial and traffic areas
Washed-out joints make paving stones rock and shift – causing trip hazards, weed growth and damage to the base. If the base is load-bearing, bound re-jointing or a joint stabiliser can stabilise existing paving and natural stone areas without relaying them. We organise material and execution for municipal and commercial areas.
Applications
- Market squares, pedestrian zones and historic paving
- Commercial yards, loading zones and car parks
- Bus stops, footpaths and traffic islands
- Cemeteries, parks and school yards
- Yards of industrial and logistics companies
Scope of services
- Checking bedding, load-bearing capacity, drainage and movement – relaying may be needed if settlement has occurred
- Selection of bound jointing mortar (cementitious or resin-bound) or joint stabiliser
- Raking out old joints and cleaning the area
- Jointing in sections with traffic management and curing
- Advice on maintenance, winter service and release for vehicles
Choosing the right jointing mortar
There are resin-bound (e.g. epoxy) and cementitious jointing mortars. Permeability, flexibility and load capacity depend on the specific product and the whole paving structure – not on the binder alone. Joint stabilisers consolidate existing sand joints near the surface and do not replace fully bound re-jointing.
A load-bearing structure suited to the joint is essential: a bound joint on unbound bedding can crack under movement, and jointing alone does not repair an unstable construction. Joint width and depth, thorough raking out and release times matter.
How your project works
- Assess area, stone type, joint pattern and traffic load from photos
- Check bedding, base and drainage – create a trial area
- Remove old joint material to the required depth using a method suited to the paving structure and joint geometry, clean the area
- Jointing in sections with traffic management and curing
- Release for pedestrians and vehicles, maintenance and winter service advice
Information for your quotation
- Area in m², stone type and format, joint width and depth
- Traffic load (pedestrians, cars, HGVs, buses)
- Condition of bedding and base, photos
- Heritage requirements, if any
- Preferred execution period
Frequently asked questions
Which jointing mortar is trafficable?
That depends on the specific mortar, bedding, base and joint geometry – not on the binder alone. HGV and bus traffic usually requires bound construction with an adequately designed base.
Does a bound joint prevent weeds?
It inhibits weeds, but seeds can still germinate in surface deposits – regular cleaning still makes sense.
