1. What does a sound level meter measure?

A sound level meter measures the sound pressure level in the environment. Sound is a form of mechanical vibration that propagates through a medium such as air or water. The sound pressure level is usually measured in decibels (dB) and indicates how strong the sound pressure is compared to a reference value.

2. How does a sound meter work?

The operation of a sound meter is based on a microphone that converts sound into electrical signals. These signals are then amplified, filtered, and converted into decibels to determine the sound pressure level. Modern sound level meters often have various settings and filters to analyze sound across different frequency bands and measure relevant parameters such as the equivalent continuous sound level (LAEQ) or the peak level.

3. Which device measures decibels?

A sound level meter is the device that measures decibels by capturing the sound pressure level in the environment. There are various types of sound level meters ranging from simple handheld devices to complex professional devices with extended functions such as recording, data storage, and analysis.

4. Can you rent a sound meter?

Yes, it is possible to rent or borrow a sound meter. This can be a cost-effective option if you only need the device temporarily or are not ready to bear the cost of purchasing your own instrument.

5. When is a sound level meter with recording function useful?

A sound level meter with a recording function is useful in various situations, especially when a precise and detailed analysis of sound levels is required. These include workplaces, environmental monitoring, architecture and room acoustics, events and entertainment, as well as quality control in production.

Here are some situations where such a device might be useful:

  1. Occupational safety: In workplaces where noise poses a potential risk to the health and safety of employees, it is important to measure the sound level precisely to ensure that it does not exceed legal limits.

  2. Environmental monitoring: In environments where the noise level may affect the environment, such as near airports, highways or industrial sites, it is crucial to monitor the sound level to ensure it remains within acceptable limits.

  3. Architecture and room acoustics: When planning buildings or designing rooms, it is important to measure the sound level to ensure acoustic conditions meet requirements. A sound level meter with recording function can help identify problem areas and develop suitable solutions.

  4. Events and entertainment: At events such as concerts, festivals or sports events, it is important to control the sound level to ensure it is not harmful to health and that local regulations are complied with.

  5. Quality control: In production environments where noise generation plays a role, a sound level meter with recording function can be used to ensure that products meet the required acoustic standards.

6. What are the differences between Class I and Class II sound level meters?

Sound level meters are generally classified into two classes: Class I and Class II. This classification refers to the accuracy and applications for which the device is suitable. Here are the differences between the two classes:

Class I:

  1. Highest accuracy: Class I sound level meters provide the highest accuracy in sound level measurement. They are suitable for applications where precise measurements are required, such as in industry, occupational safety, or environments with strict regulations.

Class I sound level meters are legally admissible because they provide the highest accuracy in measuring sound levels and meet stricter calibration requirements. These devices are often used in situations requiring precise measurements that must withstand legal scrutiny or serve as evidence in legal disputes. Class I devices are generally better suited to meet the high standards and requirements of courts and authorities.

  2. Wide frequency range: Class I devices typically cover a wide frequency range and can therefore also be used for measuring sound across various frequency bands.

  3. Calibration: They require regular calibration to ensure their accuracy. Calibration is usually carried out in specialized labs or by authorized bodies.

Class II:

  1. Suitable for general applications: Class II sound level meters offer good accuracy and are sufficient for most general applications. They are often used in areas such as construction permits, environmental monitoring, and event venues.

  2. Simpler calibration: Compared to Class I devices, Class II devices may not require the same frequency or intensity of calibration. However, it is still important to perform calibration according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure accuracy.

  3. Cost-effective: Class II devices are generally less expensive to purchase and maintain compared to Class I devices.

The choice between a Class I or Class II sound level meter depends on the specific requirements of your application, your budget, and the applicable regulations.
